ALDI EXTENDS CONTRACT WITH KILKENNY APPLE PRODUCER WORTH €200K

The announcement comes as the Irish Apple season commences

Aldi has announced that it is renewing its contract with Kilkenny-based apple grower Philip Little in a contract worth approximately €200,000 to the fresh produce business. For the past five years, Aldi has proudly stocked apples supplied by Philip Little’s farm, who employ as many as 20 seasonal staff in the Kilkenny locality.

A six-pack of Large Red Irish Apples supplied by Philip Little will be available as a core product in Aldi stores from mid-October to April, for the amazing price of €1.99.

As an extension to his apple farming, Philip also makes his own honey from the bees that pollinate the Apple Crop! He also takes part in a new initiative called Neighbourhood food which is a network of Irish suppliers and growers that unite to supply fresh food to communities around Ireland.

Speaking about the announcement, owner Philip Little, said; “We are thrilled to renew our contract with Aldi for another year, their support for our business is so appreciated. We’ve been supplying Aldi stores with our fresh produce for five years now, it’s a partnership that is very important to us and one we hope to continue for many more years to come.”

The six-pack of Large Red Irish Apples will be on sale in 148 Aldi stores nationwide from mid-October to April while stocks last.

When you’ve picked up your fresh apples, why not try out Aldi’s autumnal recipe for Pancakes with Caramelised Apples? Here’s what you need to do:

Ingredients

  • 75g Plain Flour
  • 1 Egg
  • 200ml 1% Fat or Semi Skimmed Milk
  • 2 tsp Vegetable Oil
  • 1 Apple, cored and thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp Caster Sugar
  • Lemon, finely grated zest plus juice

Method

  1. Put the flour into a large jug or mixing bowl. Add the egg and milk and beat with a wire whisk or a hand-held electric beater to make a smooth batter
  2. Heat a pancake pan or non-stick frying pan
  3. Add 2-3 drops of vegetable oil
  4. Pour in a quarter of the batter, and tilt the pan so that it flows evenly over the surface
  5. Cook over a medium heat for 1-2 minutes until set, then flip over to cook the other side
  6. Make 4 pancakes in total, adding 2-3 drops of oil to the pan for each one
  7. Keep the pancakes in a warm place until all of them are cooked
  8. Heat the remaining oil in the frying pan and add the apple slices, cooking them over a medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes, and turning often
  9. Sprinkle the sugar over them and cook for another few moments until lightly browned. Add the lemon zest and juice, stir to coat, then remove from the heat
  10. Serve one pancake per person, topped with the caramelised apples
