ALDI Ireland today officially opened its new store in Tuam, Co. Galway, the latest step in the company’s dedicated West of Ireland expansion programme which will see over €63 million invested and more than 140 new full-time jobs created across Connacht over the next two years.

The new Tuam store, ALDI Ireland’s 10th store in Galway will see the creation of 30 new permanent full-time jobs across management and store assistant roles. This brings the number of people employed by ALDI in the county to almost 240.

Located on Ballygaddy Road, ALDI’s Tuam store was officially opened today in the presence of the local team and Store Manager Catriona Conneely.

The spacious new 1,315sqm store features ALDI’s award-winning Project Fresh layout, characterised by wide aisles and hi-spec fixtures and fittings. There are 97 car park spaces available to ALDI shoppers, along with four free-to-use electric vehicle chargers and 10 bike spaces.

Speaking at the Tuam store opening, Catriona Conneely, ALDI Tuam Store Manager said:

“Earlier this month, we announced a major expansion programme in Connacht that will see us invest more than €63m in six new stores and create more than 140 full time jobs and 350 construction jobs. This new €12m store in Tuam is the latest step in that programme and I’m delighted to open our 10th Galway store and our 153rd store in Ireland. This new store, and the 30 new jobs created, will support our ambition to deliver value to the people of Tuam and County Galway at locations most convenient to them.

“As a leading retailer in Ireland, we are very conscious of the current challenges facing consumers and businesses. The cost-of-living crisis is impacting every household and we know what it means for our customers. ALDI Ireland is steadfast in our belief that continued investment in our value offering and our store network is key.  Working alongside our strong network of local suppliers, we will continue to work hard, mindful of the challenges facing our customers and supporting them in weathering this storm.”

ALDI currently partners with five Irish food and drink producers across Co Galway and spent €16.7 million with its Galway suppliers in 2021. ALDI is committed to growing its Irish supply base and increasing the number of locally produced Irish products available at its stores. Last year, the retailer spent €1 billion with its Irish food and drink suppliers.

“We are proud to support local suppliers, local communities and local employment, whether through our Grow with ALDI programme, our Community Grants initiative or our support of charity partners Barnados and FoodCloud.

“Households and families in Tuam and the surrounding areas can now shop at their local ALDI and enjoy our range of great quality fresh produce, Irish ingredients and household products at value that just won’t be beaten. At a time when everyone is grappling with rising costs, the ability to offer our customers the best value at locations most convenient to them matters more than ever. Our promise to our Tuam customers is that we will never be beaten on price, and we will always provide the best value when they shop with us.

“We were very encouraged by the response to our recruitment campaign locally, with a high level of applications received and processed. We are delighted to welcome our 30 new people to the Tuam team and look forward to working together to deliver a great service and product offering to our local customers.

“We aim to ensure the very best customer shopping experience, and the spacious and modern design of our new Tuam store means it is easy for customers to pick up what they need – including some amazing products from our local Galway suppliers, including Loughnane’s Family Butchers and The Foods of Athenry.”
