New sustainable packaging to remove almost 26 tonnes of non-recyclable plastic from stores annually
Aldi Ireland has introduced new sustainable packaging across ten of its own-label products this month, which will see almost 26 tonnes of non-recyclable plastic removed from Aldi’s 145 Irish stores each year.
Aldi is trialling new 100% recyclable paper packaging on three of its 200g wholefood nut products, namely Brazil Nuts, Hazelnuts and Mixed Nuts, in over half of its Irish stores. Aldi is the first retailer in Ireland to introduce this type of packaging across its nut ranges which, if successful, will see 4.65 tonnes of non-recyclable plastic removed from its stores annually, equating to more than 626,000 pieces of plastic.
Aldi’s multipack soft drinks are also getting a brand new look as Aldi becomes the first supermarket to scrap non-recyclable plastic shrink wrap on its multipacks, switching to fully recyclable cardboard packaging. This will see almost three tonnes of non-recyclable material being removed from stores every year, equating to more than 378,000 pieces of plastic. Customers will find all three of Aldi’s own-label cola multipacks now use the sustainable card packaging, which is in stores now.
Watch out for upcoming launches such as Orange and Tropical Blast cans which will also comprise sustainable card packaging.
Aldi also recently introduced fully recyclable wax paper across two of its own-label bread (Wholemeal Sliced Pan and White Family Pan), becoming the first supermarket in Ireland to do so. The switch sees 18 tonnes of non-recyclable plastic removed from stores each year.
These initiatives are part of Aldi’s long-term plastic reduction programme, which is working to ensure 100% of Aldi’s own-label packaging is reusable, recyclable or compostable next year, and to reduce plastic packaging on Aldi products by 50% by 2025.

Since introducing its plastic-reduction strategy, Aldi has removed more than 2,050 tonnes of virgin plastic from its 145 Irish stores in addition to replacing almost 930 tonnes of non-recyclable material with recyclable alternatives.
Over the past year, Aldi has made huge progress towards achieving its targets to reduce and remove the amount of plastic used across its business. Successes include; becoming the first retailer in Ireland to introduce 100% recycled PET water bottles across its own-label water range. This is a change which affects more than 30 million water bottles each year; becoming the first retailer to trial 100% home compostable bags across its 1kg Irish Rooster Potato range; and becoming the first retailer in Ireland to fully remove all black plastic from core food ranges.
