Aldi’s westernmost store in Europe creates 20 permanent jobs in South Kerry Town

Aldi today announced the opening of its new store in Caherciveen, Co. Kerry, its 150th store in Ireland since entering the Irish market in 1999. The store represents an investment of over €5M in the local area and is creating up to 20 permanent jobs with market leading pay. Located at Abbey Place, Aldi’s westernmost store in Europe was officially opened today by Group Managing Director Niall O’Connor, Store Manager Colm Foley and local social media influencers Tadhg Fleming and his father Derry. Much loved public figure Kevin the Carrot even took some time off his busy schedule to attend the store opening and lend his support to staff!

New Store Design

Featuring Aldi’s exciting award-winning Project Fresh layout and design, the new store, Aldi’s 8th in Co. Kerry, boasts a large shop floor spanning 1,198sqm. There are also 72 car park spaces available for customers, in addition to 8 bike parking stands. With sustainability in mind, Aldi has invested in ventilation heat recovery which will be used to power underfloor heating, in addition to installing 90sqm solar panels on the roof. The new environmentally friendly store will be powered by 100% green electricity.

Speaking at today’s store opening, Niall O’Connor, Aldi Group Managing Director said: “We’re truly delighted to open Aldi’s 150th store in Ireland today in Caherciveen, South Kerry. It’s a significant milestone for our Irish business to reach a store count of 150 after first opening our doors in Cork and Parnell St, Dublin in 1999. We’re excited to continue our growth strategy, with plans to invest €320 million over the next three years in the opening of 30 new stores, bringing unbeatable prices, value and employment to more towns across Ireland.”

Aldi is offering a wide range of special opening offers at its new Caherciveen store including a Premium Deep Fryer for just €24.99 (reduced from €44.99) and an Electric Garden Blower for just €29.99 (reduced from €49.99). There are lots more Specialbuys too – all at amazing prices!

Aldi’s Investment in County Kerry

Aldi now operates eight stores in Co. Kerry and has made a capital investment of €38 million in the county since it first opened a store in Rathass, Tralee in 2004. Aldi is the market-leading supermarket for pay and currently employs over 140 full-time staff in Kerry.

Community Support

All of Aldi’s stores across Co. Kerry are deeply involved in their local communities. As part of the new store opening, Aldi has donated three Aldi Play Rugby kits to Scoil Saidhbhín. As well as this, Aldi welcomed Kathleen Morris, Project leader at Parents First (a provider of the Barnardos service in Kerry) to collect a donation of €1000 as part of Aldi’s partnership with Barnardos Children’s Charity. To date, Aldi’s Kerry stores have donated over 126,000 meals to local charities through FoodCloud, saving the charities almost €160,000. Each store is also part of Aldi’s Community Grants network, with St Francis Special School and Youth Suicide Prevention Ireland just some of several charities that have availed of the €500 bursary grant this year.

In addition to supporting local charities, the Caherciveen store team also participated in Aldi’s national tree planting initiative. More than 24,000 trees were recently planted across Cloonafinneela and Cappawee, Co. Kerry to mark the new store opening. Aldi is the first retailer in Ireland to commit to planting 1 million native Irish woodland trees by 2025, working in partnership with the forestry consultancy Green Belt.
