ALDI TO RECRUIT 1,050 NEW STORE STAFF IN 2021

Aldi today announced it is seeking to recruit and train more than 1,050 new store employees throughout 2021, to support its ongoing growth and expansion in Ireland. The new roles include 700 permanent positions and 350 temporary jobs to support the current trading period.

Aldi will open four new stores in the coming months at Dunshaughlin, Douglas, Newbridge and Bayside, Dublin 13, adding to its existing network of 145, with additional stores in Cahersiveen and Killarney to follow later this year.

Aldi has also submitted six new store planning applications in the past year, seeking permission to open new stores in Castlecomer, Roaches St. Limerick, Ballybrit, Ballyhaunis, Kanturk and Shannon.

Aldi has witnessed strong sales in the last 12 months, growing by 15.2% and with over 1.4 million households shopping at its stores. It recently extended the opening hours of its 145 Irish stores in the run up to Christmas, opening its stores between 8am-11pm for the very first time.

Additional staff are required to help meet ongoing customer demand across its store network.  Over 500 additional employees have been successfully hired since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Employment opportunities are available at Store Assistant, Assistant Store Manager and Store Manager levels at different stores across the country. Aldi is committed to investing in its people and provides the opportunity for staff to progress their career into senior management.

Aldi is Ireland’s leading supermarket in terms of pay with Store Assistants able to earn up to €14.10 per hour.  It was the first supermarket to introduce The Living Wage Technical Group’s recommended Living Wage rate of €12.30 as its minimum, entry level of pay.

Welcoming the announcement, Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Leo Varadkar T.D., said:

“Aldi staff and all other supermarket workers have made a crucial contribution to our country throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, keeping stores open and providing a safe shopping environment for customers. I would like to thank them for their continued dedication and commitment during these challenging times.”

“These 1,050 new jobs are a fantastic boost for our economy. These come in addition to the 500 which were hired last year and will mean four new stores will open in the coming months.  I’m really glad to see Aldi continuing to offer both the living wage and sick pay to all employees, two benefits I would like to see more employers offering. I would like to thank them for their continued commitment to providing opportunities for Irish food and drink producers.”

Minister of State for Business, Employment and Retail, Damien English T.D., said:

“I commend Aldi’s ongoing commitment to Ireland through the expansion of its store network and through the new job opportunities it is creating.  Both are welcome developments for the wider Irish retail sector.  For those who decide on retail as a career of choice, Aldi’s announcement is a great boost and over one thousand people can apply through the company’s recruitment and training process to commence or develop their careers.”

Niall O’Connor, Group Managing Director Aldi Ireland commented on the recruitment plans for 2021 saying:

“Our staff have played a central role in ensuring people have had access to essential best value groceries in a safe environment. Additional investment for 2021 in new stores, store extensions and Project Fresh store upgrades confirms our continued commitment to the Irish economy.”

“Our ambitious plans require 1,050 new staff to join the Aldi team this year, so we can continue providing the best shopping experience in Ireland. We successfully recruited an additional 500 colleagues in 2020. We take pride in being one of the best employers in the country, currently employing over 4,500 colleagues and paying industry leading wages.”

Aldi is particularly focused on working to double its footprint of stores within Dublin, adding to the 23 it already operates.  It is currently offering a 1.5% ‘finder’s fee’ for suitable site referrals within the Greater Dublin Area.
