ALDI TO INTRODUCE NEW 100% RECYCLABLE PAPER PACKAGING ACROSS TOILET PAPER AND KICTHEN TOWEL RANGES

Aldi Ireland announced that it will be trialling new 100% recyclable paper packaging across two of its toilet paper and kitchen towel products. If successful, the new paper packaging could help remove 166 tonnes of non-recyclable plastic packaging from stores in Ireland each year across Aldi’s toilet paper and kitchen towel ranges.

Sales of Aldi’s toilet paper and kitchen towels have grown in recent months, increasing year-on-year by over 25% between March and June this year.

From 3rd August, customers will find the new 100% recyclable paper packaging around Aldi’s Saxon Blast Kitchen Towels and Luxury Toilet Paper 9 pack. The trial is part of Aldi’s long-term plastic reduction programme, which aims to reduce plastic packaging across its 142 Irish stores by 50% by 2025.

Aldi has been working with its supplier for the last 8 months to implement the new packaging.

Commenting, John Curtin, Aldi Group Buying Director, said: “We are committed to reducing plastic packaging across all our own-label products. Customers are guaranteed that the new 100% recyclable paper packaging is still of the same robust quality as before. Sales of toilet paper and kitchen towels have risen significantly since the beginning of Covid-19, supporting the drive for an ever-increasing need for eco-friendly initiatives as we move towards a more sustainable future.”

To date, Aldi has implemented a series of changes across its product offering with a major focus on the removable of plastic. This includes introducing compostable and recyclable packaging in its fresh herb range, replacing black plastic trays with cardboard trays in its Specially Selected tomato range, moving all 1ltr fresh Irish milk to fully renewable and plant-based packaging, and introducing three new environmentally friendly bag options in its stores, saving the use of 12.5 million plastic bags annually.
